Gawayne is attacked by bandits in the woods of north wales and northwest midlands. They attack him, they rob him, they even take his horse, and they leave him behind. Gawayne has a moment of horror and despair where he imagines that he might simply lay down and die. But he's able to free himself from his bonds and proceed forward on foot. The whole scene helps to show the real dangers of travelling alone in remote places in mediaeval world.
