Spelling Bees - What Is the Shoi?
English is the best language for a spelling bee because it preserves history of words. As pronunciations change, there's kind of a divergence between sound and sight. So two vowels next to each other can be a shois sound - like in mountain or ocean. The dreaded shwa comes from pinching off different parts of the vocal tract.
