The gut is a 30 foot long structure responsible for digesting and absorbing the food that we eat or the fuel. The mouth does mechanical digestion with chewing, but there's also some enzymatic processes that are going on there. From the stomach, you go into the small intestine where most of the absorption happens. And then finally, the last part is the colon, which also does some absorption. So yeah, the gastrointestinal system is the two plus all these accessory parts that work in coordination to not only digest and absorb the foods you eat, but also to protect your body from things in the environment.
