Introduction

Nigeria's President General Olushe Gong Obasanjo proposes a plan to build a great green wall in the Sahara Desert. In the 1980s, the vast desert and surrounding areas had experienced one of the worst droughts of the 20th century. Eighty percent of land was degraded from the effects of single crop farming forced on farmers during the French colonial era. But today the project is worryingly behind schedule. Most of the trees originally planted have died.
