The Future of Language Restoration
The last known speaker of the Mandan language, Mandan Indians, in North Dakota died a few years ago. He was miked up and had him tell stories and do alphabets but just followed him through life ordering food at a restaurant or talking with his friends. Now we have this immense file of Edwin Benson speaking Mandan. There's no reason why we couldn't a create a Mandan dictionary, a Mandan grammar or create training programs based on that to teach young people how to speak this language.
