The Clean Air Act Helped Improve the Air We Breathe

In 1952, 18% of the UK's coal was being expanded on people keeping themselves warm at home. This produced around 60% of the smoke pollution, or what we now think is particle pollution,. So it's quite a disproportionately polluting source. We think that around 8%, at least a year or so ago, around 8% of UK homes were burning solid fuel - mostly wood. And this was producing more particle pollution than all of the exhausts from all of the vehicles that we have on our road.
