Emily's Love Affair With Susan Gilbert
Higginson helped to publish the first volume of Emily's poetry in 1890, four years after her death. Although with a caveat, he edited her poems to suit the norms of the time - something which would have clearly gone against Emily's wishes. With that said, there was one person who recognized Emily's genius during her lifetime: Her closest friend Susan Gilbert. In their letters, we meet a very different Emily, one we haven't encountered yet in her poetry or in her Higginson letters. But one thing is for certain. In February 1852, Emily writes to Susan.
