I think to my point of view, I'm a big defender of ideology. It's not a kind of solipsism that changes the reality that I see. So in that sense, I agree with you entirely that like Stalin's ideology mattered immensely because it shaped the kinds of choices that he made. But at the same time, his psychology mattered a lot. And some parts of the ideology were going to be more seductive to him because of his psychology. Psychology and ideology are much more interrelated than people think.
