Jazz soloists deliberately use small downbeat delays with respect to the rhythm section. The swing feel relies on this hidden element we're not consciously aware of. Even professional jazz musicians were astounded that they couldn't explain why they preferred performances with downbeat delays. We can hear differences in timing as small as one hundredth of a second, or ten microseconds.
