The defeat of the Union side 14,000 casualties essentially led to the destruction more or less of the army of Virginia. Lee was emboldened enough to get above himself I would say and attempt an invasion of Pennsylvania which ended in the Battle of Antietam. The North had pretty much endless capacity to form new armies. It did knock out sort of McClellan's right hand McClellan’s little warm tongue.
