I'm more interested in is there such a thing as African-American culture that I am with the appropriation side of it. To me appropriation in the art world is the counterpart of colonialism in the geopolitical world. It does happen. What we make of it I think depends on where we stand politically. We don't have a nation state, we have a continent and although the slave trade was primarily western Africa, it is a continent because of chattel slavery in the United States most of us have no idea exactly where our people came from.
