The Nebrikata of Bella
Bloom imagines himself, turning into a little female piglet that scurries under the sofa and peeks out through the fringe. The nymph in the picture over his bed appears and teases Bloom for having lusted after her. What has happened here is that Bloom has undergone a psychological crisis. This whole crisis has taken place in Bloom's mind during the few seconds of time that he has been looking at Bella. These things can happen very, very secretly; Joyce has rendered all of the imagery that underlies the crisis in Bloom's imagination. To do so, Joyce has used two time systems, one for the outer world and the other for this inner world.
