L. Ron Hubbard moved into the Parsons mansion in 1945, only three years older than Jack and true to form everyone in the house was either repulsed or charmed by good old Ron. Although he has no formal training and magic, he has an extraordinary amount of experience and understanding in the field. When he met L.R.H., he was just like, I don't need to massage this guy at all. And that's actually pretty much the major barrier to entry at the very, very top.
