People's temple members jockeyed for position within the church hierarchy. To be one of his partners was an automatic ticket into the church aristocracy. Men who had negative reactions to the idea of sects were accused by everybody else of being repressed and homophobic, which were two cardinal sins in the church. Jim always framed his liaisons with the temple womenit it was an act of compassion for him.
