In the modern world this queen and her reign is considered to be controversial at best. Most people particularly from a number of western sources condemn her as a power hungry and tyrannical leader while others would go and appreciate that she did strive to preserve the ancient traditional Malagase culture. Regardless of their feelings towards her domestic policies and how it is that she treated people many people still consider that she was a woman of immense strength and a remarkable figure in Malagase history.
In 1828, after the death of her husband, Queen Ranavalona I. came into power by killing all other potential regents (wives, sons, mothers). At that time, she was between 30 and 40 years old. Ranavalona I. went down in history rather ingloriously and bears the surname “the cruel”. Many Malagasy call her regency tany maizina, in English “years of darkness”. But despite this she is still a rather complex character. One who did amazing and terrible things at the same time. Let us tell her story today
