Is the Theory of Mimeetic Desire a Good Thing?

Our culture, the formation of institutions and prohibitions, even sports, all of these things are mechanisms that came into existence in order to mitigate the most destructive effects of mimeetic conflict and rivalry. So clearly, there's something about our civilizational progress, at least in America or other Western democracies, where a medic desire has been constrained  in ways that make it much more manageable.
