The evolutionary goal is for children to adapt to whatever environment they're in so that they're not in a constant state of stress. When born into an unsupportive or a hostile environment, the brain doesn't develop normally. And there was a study of some 2000 adults in their 60s in the 60s that found when it came to telling their life stories, these are six year old adults.
