Missionaries also produced manuscript drawings of fauna and flora based on detailed observation, including that of a hippopotamus or sea horse. The jesuits publishing activities were not limited to european printing houses. They exported printing presses to publish books and pamphlets in india, japan, peru and mexico. In goa and nagasaki, on the other hand, they imported a gutenberg press. Curiously, a type first arrived in japan from korea, where it was used by joson dynasty printers from as early as the thirteenth century.
