The Importance of Language in a Fantasy Setting
I like to delve on the idea of language and the difference in dialects of Chinese. How did language evolve over time and can one person be understood by another? How would a conversation between two NPCs play out? And even if you don't speak Chinese or unfamiliar with Chinese, you can still understand the concept of dialects and accents. What does a different accent represent in the eyes of one character versus another? What does the so-called educated person sound like versus someone who comes from a countryside rural setting? Once you start tackling those questions, you can build a more fleshed out world in my opinion.
