The New Deal Order expanded access to healthcare, creating a mass class of insured patients. The role of the physician was to make people as normal as possible and force them to adjust to society because that was seen as the highest measure of psychologically healthy development. There's also just this broader very 1950s idea of the duty of the American individual is to conform to society.
