Nothing is invented so if I describe a smell in the street or that there's throwing out a chamber put a chamber pot at 11 o'clock at night then that comes from a diary or a description. Luckily for us historians there are thousands of letters because these were all writers and poets and they were quite gossipy so they would write to each other all the time.
