The Chain Saw and the War of the Worlds by H G Wells
Saws pre-date the modern chain saw. They would have been powered by a central wood fired steam boiler, and had to be transported on a horse drawn platform. A ransom r a n s o m e was used for logging in europe and africa around the twentieth century. It is difficult to imagine how much more portable this is than the light, hand held chainsaw of today.
