The Suez Canal

The Suez Crisis demarcates quite clearly the end of the age of British dominance in world affairs. Egypt was so determined to avoid Israel having access to the Suez Canal, so determined to make sure the Israelis couldn't use it, right? That they closed the canal altogether once again to everyone. They've come out way, way on top from this whole thing. And and and and France and Britain are retreating with their tail between their legs due to international pressure that had been put on them even after a military victory.
