People who saw their income double from 50,000 a year to a hundred thousand dollars a year from 1970 to 1980 didn't see a real increase in their purchasing power. Inflation did the government's dirty work for it without having to get their hands dirty by officially raising rates. inflation heard people was reducing the return on their investments particularly interest that they earned on bonds because it's the nominal rate of interest that gets taxed.
