The big bang was 14 billion years or so ago. At that point the universe was filled with hydrogen atoms and helium atoms, not a lot else. And somehow they aggregated to the first galaxies and stars. Now we're pushing into that era. If this distance we have measured for for masie's galaxy, of a redshift of 14 holds true, then we are seeing a time only 290 million years after the big bang.
