differences in temperature and density are what keeps clouds in their shape but come to think of it not all clouds do have edges some seem to stretch endlessly across the whole sky. A cloud that is spread out in a layer is a stratus cloud if it's low in the sky it was higher up it could be an alto stratus or a zero stratus but it's always got that word stratus because that is a Latin for a layer perhaps a blanket. Even these flat stratus type clouds can form patterns and cloud says this is down to the properties of fluids like air and water.
