The Sacrificial Holocaust
In Genesis, the patriarchs made offerings where they pleased. But now Israel had a proper home for its deity. Leviticus is adamant that sacrifices can only be made at the tabernacle and by implication Solomon's temple in Jerusalem. Matters became rather more complicated after the Jews returned from the Babylonian exile. The sacrificial rites had ceased when the Babylonians had destroyed Jerusalem and the temple in 587 BC. 60 years later, one of the first things the returnees did was to reconstruct the slaughter site and then lay the foundations for a new temple. God would have another 600 years to enjoy the aromatic barbecue before the Roman general and later emperor Vespasian would destroy the Jerusalem
