The Meaning of Average

In a colloquial context, a mathematical mode is also often referred to as an average. Batting averages, average temperatures and average test scores are just a few everydayexamples where the word average does indeed refer to an arithmetic mean. The best guess among etymologists is that average derives from the ar bic word awar, which means defect, blemish, or something that's been damaged.
