The way to really know what the past weather and seasonal change was like, it is through the investigation of taking core samples in the soil. There's a whole scientific field that can try and determine what was the likelihood based on the flora that you find or other other aspects at a particular point in history. It's yet to be done in the Gulf, to my knowledge. And ethnobotany is a very important part of this as well but I don't think there's been much research done on that.
