The American Military's 'Free Fire Zones'
American troops could declare certain areas something called free fire zones. This meant that any one in the parimeters of that area was an enemy, full stop. It didn't matter if it was a 70 year old woman or a six year old american g is had permission to shoot and kill anything with a pulse in that radius. When entering a free fire zone, a very common order from officers was tote, kill anything that moves. One American soldier recalled quote: If you saw or heard or thought you saw or hear movement in the house next door, you just tossed in a grenade.
