There's a sexual ambiguity to it, and this sense of sexual exploitation as well. You're never quite sure whether they're awake or asleep? Or indeed unconscious or drugged in some cases! I mean, it is very puzzling at times. It is obviously about colonialism, but he's not sort of delivering a kind of pious lecture here. There is corruption on all sides, and compromise on all sides. Everybody seems to be involved in this Graham Greenish film. If Graham Green was French, that you might get something like this. But again, it adds to that sort of disconcerting quality.
