Patrick was taken as a boy probably around about the age of 1516 as a slave. He clearly is appalled by the injustice of slavery from his own experience so we don't know quite how he achieved it but we do know that by the end of his time in Ireland when he dies as an old man slavery is more or less eradicated from Ireland. A lot of Aidan's community would be made up of freed slaves so they were working to eradicate slavery and this was seen as part of the Christian gospel to free people from that. It's sad that at some point in history slavery came back into the kind of coinage of Christian thinking again and seemed to accept it after will before still
