The Foundling Hospital

Justine's mother spends 12 years in the foundling hospital's care. The first five years she lives with a foster mother, which was a practice dating back to the institution's early history. Most of them were not told that they were even leaving their home and being taken away unceremoniously. They would be put in bath tubs eow, two or three at a time; never see those clothes again.
