The Disenchantment of Reality
There was a sense of a bigger world than just what you can see around you. And I suppose it was pretty disenchanted a little bit by the scientific revolution. So that's led to a sort of disenchantment, a sense that there is no mystery beyond the things that we can see and feel. We kind of sense we're made for something bigger and something that is unseen. That's why the medieval ancestors talked about angels and demons or so on. Because they realize that the unseen realities are not all benign. There are dark forces that work in our world at the same time.
