Incumbent Reelection - Is Democracy on the Rise?
I think it's fair to say that in lots of bad democracies incumbents get reelected without there being any meaningful accountability. That doesn't mean that just because incumbents are getting reelected at high rates that necessarily means that democracy isn't functioning. So just looking at the rate of incumbent re-election seems to tell me almost nothing about is democracy on the rise or not. It could be I don't know so I don't find that to be by itself all that informative. But if democracy is really in danger in some sense we should be expecting those those lines increasing.
