Do You Know Why the Gills Declined?
A lot of people think that the phrase to be at 6 and 7 predates Chaucer but it's rather a nice story. The other big source of potential problem with them was their monopolist. They're all kinds of way the trades overlapped. I remember when I first started doing guiding on gills I had to check on the difference between a chord wane or a cobbler because I didn't know. It doesn't really make much sense to keep trades within the city of London when things like nails for example can be manufactured so much more cheaply elsewhere.
