The problem of time and quantum gravity has been growing on for well over half a century, because most people are thinking in terms of standard quantum mechanics. There's a long history of trying to make sense of the will of the wave equation in quantum mechanics but it's still a very murky subject. It does look to me as if already just in standard quantum mechanics with the measurement problem and the lack of a clear sense of what is real.
