We Can't Judge People in the Past
There are people who argue that judging historical figures to the lens of modern values and morals, that it just doesn't work. In some ways, our modern notions about racism simply cannot be overlaid on to people living in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. But at the same time, that's what we have. We have our current values. And if we don't superimpose them on the past, then the past continues to live amongst us....
