Grace Is Not Preceded by Any Merit
A passage from St. Augustine captures this idea that our merits or God's gifts very, very well. So it is a divine gift both when we think rightly and when we restrain our feet from falsity and injustice,. As often as we do good God operates in us and with us that we may work. Another passage from the same council, grace is not preceded by any merit. A reward is due to good works if they are performed, but grace which is not due proceeds that they may be done.
