The film is a bit of an homage to Japanese cinema in general and so it wants to sort of go through different genres that have been popular at different times in Japanese history. The deeper thing is the cosmological view the film is embedded in this of the background culture of of Japan involves some sort of broad awareness of Buddhist ideas of rebirth and cyclical renewal. So it captures that idea of a cyclical rebirth and the film is going through history makes it gives us all the appearance of this happening down the centuries but rather than seeing that as torturous like this is imagining Sisyphus happy she's found a way to like live in this cycle too.
