Are We Losing Explanatory Power?

Physicists are trying to not make quantum physics an explanation. But the thing is, then, yes, you could fill in those gaps. Those people were filling in the gaps with their own explanation. And that should make us think that we needto, we need to do something. A good explanation would open up new research programmes into asking why there's a symmetry at all.
