The Role of Women on Welfare

Premelan argues that welfare was uncontroversial until the late 1950s and 60s. In order to qualify for these funds, families had to be considered suitable homes. Women of color were excluded from the welfare roles in the early years. As more black women used welfare,. there were more attacks on the system and all the women that needed it. These fears would eventually crystallize into the myth of the welfare queen.
