Is There a Real Me?
The more you can get in touch with who you really are, the more reliable you can be. The claim that there's some kind of me or real self in there that's somehow independent of institution and culture and family and so on is a complete illusion. It's a revival of an old idea that this pure pristine self can be discovered apart from institutions and then become the criterion for meaning and value. And I think most troubling is the way in which this contemporary authentic self is increasingly identified with desire or what we want.
