In 1985, an American with a college degree can get off an airplane in Japan and get a job. So he bought a one-way ticket to Japan, went with a friend, and we got jobs as English teachers. And I did that for about two years. While there, I didn't lose my love of reading; I would just read all kinds of things. But I ran across a book called Man and His Symbols by Carl Jung. It explained so much the way it explained human behavior through ancient mythology and symbolism. That's what led me to go to medical school and ultimately become a psychiatrist.
