The Dualism of Blancheau
Christop Biedon's life as Blancheau had many close brushes with death. He was almost executed by the Vlasov army and he survived that. And thereafter, he nearly died in his mid 60s. But I'm not sure those events were what made him focus upon dying and death. That seems to have been apparent to him very early on.
