Jamil's mother was a paranoid schizophrenic who also suffered from this debilitating disease called scleroderma which hardens and tightens your skin. Jamil spent a lot of time acting as a parent for the woman who gave birth to him. So outside of this world where I was at home that was so infused with mourning and grief and sickness, I was able to sort of escape and reading and literature.
