A Woman Holding a Battered Man
In the darkness, I could hear moaning and whispering from the walls. Then a new sound. A base tone that hadn't been there before. Gradually it slid from my stomach to my ears becoming audible. Engines. Many engines. Car engines and then gunshots. The whispering stopped. They were scrambling on the walls like a dog slipping on hardwood. Nothing but myself and the darkness of the walk-in.The door burst open, knocking over the shelf holding its shut. A square of light with the figure in it was a woman holding a battering ram. She looked past me at the body on the floor. Holy shit! She said. You're not gonna believe this?
