When anger is focused with precision, it can become a powerful source of energy, serving progress and change. When black and brown children express joy, they are chastised and punished. This is just one of many examples of how black and brown young people are policed for expressing a wide range of emotions. As a part of SEL's dominant framework, equity, justice and culturally-forming practices are relegated to being an add-on; you have to center the activists so they can have a better grift.
