Is Consciousness a Working Hypothesis?

There is no knockdown single argument for why evolution hit upon consciousness as a useful thing to endow organisms with. It's very satisfying because there's all kinds of complex behavior in biological systems that we think probably aren't conscious. So I would just say it's a working hypothesis. And you'll just give one example of how you think about this all the time. How has it impacted your actual life? There's no other version of me that's true. I've been thinking about it forever. In one sense, I really feel like an extremely fortunate person because I started thinking about consciousness at school. Many people do. Who am I? What's going on?"
