The Roman Empire and Christianity
The Roman Empire was not one that was really big on self-denial. Rome was famously a gluttonous culture, where you would go to cause yourself to vomit so you could go back and eat more. Christians had this weird sexual ethic. They said you could only have sex in the context of monogamous marriage. You couldn't have sex with your slaves. That was a really out way out of the dorm within the Roman Empire.
